Greenhill Cemetery Guardian: Alvin "Rex"McGee
This is a very large, public cemetery located in rural Northern Titus County adjacent to the historic Green Hill Church. It is fenced and kept in very good condition. An endowment fund of approximately $38,000 was donated by Tess Hood Maley, daughter of Will Hood. In accordance with her will, it is required that $100 worth of flowers be placed on the family lot in the cemetery each year. A controversial tradition states that Moses Rose, the only man who refused to stay at the Alamo during the Texas Revolution is buried in this cemetery. This fact, however, is disputed by some historians. The first land was given by a Rev. E. H Green. Decoration day is held annually on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May. The cemetery has been awarded a State Historical Plaque from the State Historical Survey. It states: The Rev. Edward Hollister Green Born Madison County Ala. May 14, 1927 Died Titus County Texas, Nov. 12, 1863. Son of James Ward and Elizabeth (Bass) Green. Educated at Centre College, Danville, KY and New Albany Theological Seminary, Ind. Licensed and ordain in Memphis Presbytery, preached 1853-59 in Tennessee. Came to Texas, Founded Church here Sept. 23, 1860. Held pastorate until his death. He married Catherine Hall of Tipton County, Tenn. 1850. They had a son and two daughters. Recorded 1972.
To reach the Green Hill cemetery from the Titus County court house take Jefferson Street (US 271) north for 1.5 miles (Interstate Highway 30 will be crossed over at 1.4 miles). Turn right onto FM 2152 and proceed north for 5.2 miles. Turn right (east) onto County Road (CR) 1660 (CR 28). The cemetery is on the right 0.4 miles from FM 2152.
There are 85 unreadable funeral home markers, 15 native stone markers, 2 petrified wood stones (one has a marble foot stone with the initials A. C.), 2 marble stones (one has the initials ECH 1840-1909, the other W. E. F.), 1 wooden marker, and 1 concrete marker located throughout the cemetery. Additionally there is 1 native stone cairn and a cement headstone with unreadable markings at two other grave sites.
The Guardian for this cemetery is Alvin "Rex" McGee. If you know the exact location of the gravesites that was not found, or if you know of any other Confederate Soldier that is buried here and not listed then please Contact Us.
